Early compliance with SSA requirementsThe Social Security Administration Publication (MMREF-1) released the requirements for its new reporting scheme. By 2001 companies with more than 250 employees must use the new magnetic media reporting scheme. TOM Software has given you a head start by already updating Payroll giving you a chance to take advantage of the new system. Along with the SSA, we encourage users to make a controlled, early transition to the new system. The most notable advantage of the new system is the Visual Basic Program (Accuwage) that can be run by the user against the MMREF-1 magnetic Media file to provide partial validation of the data BEFORE submittal to the SSA. If a company decides to take advantage of the new system it must make arrangements with the SSA before the new format is submitted. To make arrangements simply contact the regional SSA magnetic media coordinator or the IRS Martinsburg Computing Center at (304) 263-8700. It is important to note that the old PIBS system has not been removed from this release of payroll. TOM Software expects that it will be used even after 2001 for state reporting. Some states will be slow to convert to the new format and we must allow for delayed changes. Since you have both systems a reasonable transition is to generate the MMREF-1 file and check it using Accuwage even if you submit a PIBS file.
